Capsules

Shin-Etsu excipients for capsules shell or filling.

Capsules

Capsules are flexible dosage filled with granules or pellets. Historically being based on gelatin, capsule manufacturers have meanwhile developed capsules with a hypromellose shell. The advantages are striking: better moisture stability of the capsule as hypromellose attracts less moisture than gelatin. Less risk as hypromellose is plant derived while gelatin is animal derived. The optimal solution for patients who follow a vegetarian or vegan diet. Our products PHARMACOAT® and TYLOPUR® are suitable for the preparation of capsules while our L-HPC product supports the dispersion and release of the capsule content once the capsule is opened in the GI tract.

    Capsule shell

Capsules prepared from hypromellose have advantages in comparison with gelatin based capsules. Hypromellose capsules show a better moisture stability and are suitable for vegetarian/vegan patients. Low viscosity hypromellose products like PHARMACOAT® and TYLOPUR® are suitable for capsule manufacturing.

    Dispersing aid for capsule filling

The release of a drug is filled in hard capsules tends to be delayed because the materials in the capsules are clogged; this delay is especially significant for herbal medications. However, if L-HPC is used together with a drug as a filler, clogging can be prevented because L-HPC absorbs water and disintegrates in a shorter time, which results in the rapid release of the drug.
